You’re sitting at a table in the hallway of your house. On one side there’s a pile of Post-It notes and on the other is a blank sheet of paper with no words on it. You have nothing to do so you start playing this game called “Hawaiian Shirt.” It’s pretty simple, all you have to do is think up an idea for a story involving someone wearing a Hawaiian shirt and then find something else that comes along with it. The first time you try it, you come up with this:
It was summertime when Chad walked into his school sporting his bright green Hawaiian shirt that he found from last year’s vacation. He was carrying two huge water bottles which were perfect for his thirst as
I couldn’t believe how excited my mom was when I got home from school.
“I’m so glad you’re here!” she said, before hugging me and kissing the top of my head. “You’ll never guess what happened today.”
My mom’s face lit up with happiness as she told me that I won a trip to Hawaii in her company’s annual raffle! She seemed even happier than when I announced that I had just made honor roll for the first time.
She wanted to celebrate but all we really had in the fridge was some fruit and yogurt which wasn’t much of a celebration. The next day, we went grocery shopping together and ate dinner at our table like we always do; however this time we were eating

Waiting in line at a store with his mom, a little boy is wearing a shirt that screams “thank you so much for playing my game Hawaiian Shirt.” After patiently waiting for what seems like an eternity, the cashier finally comes to him and he is relieved that it doesn’t look like she noticed about the shirt. Seeing her mistake, she then states “oh hi! I’m sorry I didn’t see your name on the list!”
It was a nice day and you were on your way to work. As you walked out the door, you looked down at what you were wearing - an old pair of jeans and your favorite Hawaiian shirt from when you visited your family over the summer break. It’s not like it mattered too much what people wore for this job anyways. You sat down in front of your computer and opened up the game that would keep you entertained during those long hours of boredom: Hawaiian Shirt Tycoon.
The first level is always easy; everyone likes a freebie! But as soon as more levels are unlocked, things change dramatically…
“Hey, thanks so much for playing my game! I’m so happy that you enjoy it!” said the computer animated tiki. “I just hope you’re not too disappointed in some of the levels.”
“What?” replied Nora with a confused look on her face. “Are there parts of the game that are hard? I never had any trouble with them.”
The tiki shrugged his shoulders and started to type at a blinding speed. “Ah, maybe they’ll grow on you,” he muttered as he continued typing away into a pile of bananas before sitting back down next to Nora and looking up at her expectantly.
“What do you want for your birthday?” You said.
I was deep in video game land, but it wasn’t enough to keep me from hearing the words of my best friend. I turned away long enough to ask him what he wanted and he just shrugged his shoulders.
“Just get me some Hawaiian Shirt.” He says with a laugh before disappearing into the next level of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
The rest of our time together that summer was spent playing games, eating junk food and staying up way too late… But when September came around I had only one thing on my mind: getting him his birthday present without them noticing anything out of the ordinary.
