Jalen Hurts proud to have two African-American quarterbacks in the Super Bowl.
According to Yahoo Sports, on February 6th, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts considers himself a football student, which means he is acutely aware of the history he is about to make. Hurts’ matchup with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was a big focus for him and other players during the Super Bowl LVII (57) kickoff on Monday, February 6th. It marks the first time in Super Bowl history that two quarterbacks of African heritage have started the game. Unfortunately, it took until the 57th Super Bowl to attain that milestone, but Hurts recognizes its significance. “This is a historic occasion. “This is a historic moment,” quarterback Hurts remarked. “I think it offers many folks in Philadelphia something to look forward to. It teaches young people that they can even if someone tells them they can’t do something. It’s incredible to be a part of history.” DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, understands how important the historic game is too many fans. “I’d be lying if I said this isn’t emotional,” Smith, an African American, said. That’s what it means to many folks.
##Jalen Hurts a game-changer. Hurts mentioned certain elder-generation African American quarterbacks on Monday night. Hurts claimed to be wearing the black No. 7 jersey of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. “Years later, I got a green one for Philly,” Hurts recalled, referring to Vick’s signing with the Eagles in 2009.
Hurts is only 24 years old and in his third NFL season. However, he greatly admires the history of African American quarterbacks, particularly with the Eagles. “I think of all the quarterbacks who played for the Philadelphia Eagles, such Randall Cunningham, Rodney Peete, Donovan McNabb, and Michael Vick,” Hurts remarked. “This football club has a history of African American quarterbacks, and this event reflects that. “I told those boys I wanted to carry the flame for them.”
At media day, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he respects Hurts and is excited to share history with him.
“So many individuals built the groundwork before us,” Mahomes added. “That will be a special moment.”
Roughly 100 million people will view the Super Bowl, and the game’s two biggest stars will be African Americans.” From: Alishirts.com
